However, because of the general lack of understanding of metabolism and nutrition, the connection between science and sport has rarely been made or has simply been lost in translation. It seems that unless you are wealthy or currently a professional athlete, it is simply not feasible to justify the expense of recruiting such knowledge and expertise to solidify a link between your desired performance and the people who’ll get you there. Sigma does not believe in the “shotgun” approach of training where by varieties of workouts are prescribed in the hopes one or two might work best for you. To say that nutrition is ‘important’ would be the understatement of the millennium. We would even hesitate to say that nutrition is secondary to proper training prescription. Your diet will determine the fuels you burn during training, the time it takes you to recover, and will underwrite your ability to maintain high intensities while participating in your sport. Therefore, careful consideration of this training aspect is vital.
Sigma institutes a cutting edge approach to nutrition that is built upon a thorough collection of the data that drives your metabolism. Once this information is in place, a Sigma trained Nutritionist will carefully sort out which foods you should be consuming, times of day you should be eating, and the types of exercise you should be doing in order to receive the greatest return from your nutritional investment.

Sigma’s Advanced Metabolic Profile (AMP) is the only method to accurately determine the body’s individual nutritional demands for both weight loss and improvements in fitness. This profile will also identify the intensities of exercise that lead to the greatest benefit per unit of time your invested, thus adding an element of precision that you cannot ascertain from simple field tests, alone. The AMP will consist of a series of stages each designed to identify limitations in regards to your ability to lose weight or properly train for increased aerobic fitness. The test can be completed on a submaximal or maximal basis if the patient or athlete suffers from a physical or cardiovascular issue preventing high intensities of exercise. Once completed, you will be given a 30-40 minute initial consultation over the materials so that you understand the framework of initial test results. At this time, the raw information will be presented to you in manner that is easy to comprehend as well as available for immediate incorporation into your lifestyle or training protocols. Within 48 hours you will be sent via email, a beautifully constructed complete report of your profile data along with more information in regards to your current metabolic status. This report will be accompanied by a follow-up phone call (typically around 30 minutes in length) so that you may gain more insight into which directions (both nutritional and exercise-related) will benefit you most in regards to your personal and competitive goals.
These two tests have a remarkable ability to be conducted simultaneously thus providing you the ability to examine the key limitations of BOTH your aerobic and anaerobic respiratory systems at once. Identifying the intensity (and/or wattage) at which your body begins to produce energy anaerobically. Blood lactate analysis has been a gold standard of endurance science for years and remains to be the one most widely accepted tests used to determine aerobic efficiency. During this test, your exercise intensity will be increased on a gradual basis until you reach the point at which your body can no longer aerobically (with oxygen) convert its fuels to energy. This is your lactate threshold (a.k.a. anaerobic threshold, LT, AT, etc). The reason behind the name ‘lactate threshold’ is because, at this point, there will be a sharp punctuated rise in the presence of lactate (the by-product of anaerobic energy production) in your blood which signifies that the bulk of your energy is now being produced via anaerobic pathway.
Due to the negative effect that lactic acid has on your muscles and the 18-fold reduction in fuel economy when above AT, producing energy via anaerobic pathways can only be continued for a short period of time. Thus, knowing the true position of this physiological marker will keep you at the limit of your aerobic ability without involuntarily crossing your lactate threshold during a training ride or race.
Understanding the patterns of CO2 production that signal AT has been reached, we can pinpoint the exact intensity in wattage and heart rate at which this metabolic ‘switch’ occurs. Once your anaerobic threshold is reached, we plot the rise in blood lactate against your heart rate and show you exactly which intensities will have the greatest effect towards maximizing your training and racing success. As you continue through your training season, your increasing aerobic fitness will have a positive effect on your anaerobic abilities. Thus, regular analysis to identify the exact position of this training metric is crucial to your continued improvement.
